Renewing a NYC master plumber license, without the late fees
A New York City master plumber license runs on a three-year clock, and the Department of Buildings charges extra the moment it slips. Here is what renewal costs, the one course you have to sit, the window that keeps you out of the late tiers, and exactly where the renewal happens — all checked against the DOB's own pages this month.

What renewal costs
Renewing costs $150 for the license plus a $75 seal fee — $225 in total, paid to the Department of Buildings. The same schedule applies to master fire suppression piping contractors. There is no per-year proration: you pay the full fee each three-year cycle, whether you renew early inside the window or at the last minute before it lapses.
The 7-hour course
Before DOB will renew the license, you need one 7-hour renewal course from a provider DOB approves, completed within the one year immediately before renewal. It cannot be self-study or on-demand — the course runs live and in English — and you upload the original certificate with the renewal.
DOB keeps a current list of approved course providers on its site. Book the class early in the renewal year rather than the last week: seats around the expiration dates that cluster at cycle ends go fast, and without the certificate the renewal does not go through at any fee.
When to renew — and what lateness costs
DOB asks you to submit the renewal 30 to 90 days before the license expires. Submitting inside that window costs the base $225. Once the license has expired, late fees stack on top in two tiers:
| When you submit | Total | Late fee |
|---|---|---|
| 30–90 days before expiration | $225 | — |
| 1–30 days after expiration | $275 | +$50 |
| 31 days–1 year after expiration | $325 | +$100 |
The money is the smaller problem. While the license is expired, the plumber cannot legally pull permits or perform licensed work in the city — which is the real cost of missing the window by a month.
How to renew, step by step
- Sit the 7-hour DOB-approved renewal course within your final renewal year and keep the original certificate.
- Complete the LIC62 physical examination form — it must be dated within 90 days of your renewal submission.
- Renew online through DOB NOW: Licensing with a NYC.ID account. There are no walk-ins or paper renewals; scan both documents in as PDFs.
- Pay the $225 — or the late-tier total if the license has already expired.
Not sure where your expiration stands? DOB's registrant search shows the license status and expiration date for any named master.
If the license has already expired
Up to one year after expiration, DOB still renews at the higher late-tier fee — $275 or $325 depending on how long it has been. Past one year, the DOB's renewal page stops spelling out what happens, and at that point the answer can be re-application rather than renewal. If your license lapsed more than a year ago, check with DOB's licensing unit before paying for another course.
One list for every deadline
A master plumber's renewal is rarely the only date on the shop's wall — there is the business insurance, the permits on active jobs, and a certificate of insurance for every sub. CertChaser holds all of those deadlines in one place and chases the missing ones itself, for one flat monthly price.
The first step is free: tell us the shop and the license on our deadline report request form, and we'll pull every public renewal date we can find into one list, sorted by what runs out first. CertChaser itself is built and run by AI agents on NanoCorp, which is how we keep pages like this one checked against the source.
